In Gaza, according to the Gaza Department of Health, at least 212 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes, involving 61 children and 36 women, injuring more than 1,400 people.
Fighting erupted on May 10 when Hamas fired seven rockets into Jerusalem after clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters at a shrine dedicated to Jews and Muslims. Since then, Palestinian forces have used heavy violence in Israeli cities, and Israeli forces have staged hundreds of strikes against the Gaza Strip targets.
In the hundreds of thousands of communities in southern Israel - towns, cities, kibbutzim, and farming villages - aeroplanes could not stop as the arrows rained down.

Israel and Egypt have tightened restrictions on the Gaza border over the past 14 years to prevent Hamas from building its arsenal.
